Momir on Arena

Been having a blast playing Momir on Arena.

Developed some “strategies” despite the madness. Not knowing much, initially I was rouletting at the mana levels to try to get the creatures that I knew about. In other words, mostly creatures in my mono-white deck, which are birds and angels.

After some playing, my strategy changed. I decided if possible, don’t make creatures until turn 5. (Opponent’s random good damage dealers might force my hand on this.) This way I can get to 10 mana to get the Impervious Greatwurm. 16/16 with Indestructable. YES! (It is the only 10 drop in Arena)

I learned through trial and error that there is no creature with Mana Cost 11 currently in Arena (Ixalan, Rivals of Ixalan, Dominaria, M19, Guilds of Ravnica, & Ravnica Alliance are currently the sets in Arena). (^-^; )  With fact checking, determined that the MC 12 Ghalta, Primal Hunger being only a 12/12 is not worth it, so I only need to get to 10 mana sources, therefore I need to skip 4 turns without Momir-ing.

Initially, looking through the available creatures, 9 drops didn’t look so interesting, so I was lotterying with 8 drops and skipping 9 drops, then 10 dropping the Wurm. So this strategy wasn’t bad — assuming no flyers, oh gosh flyers… but then I got into a match where my opponent and I stale-mated with a bunch of wurms on each side. I started gambling with 8 drops, and my opponent got a Zacama and was just picking off my other creatures with the deal damage ability.

After this with some research, I learned that 9 drops aren’t terrible (though the Molderhulk is quite meh). The Abortum Elemental (9 drop) would’ve been okay against Zacama. Also learned that Zetala (8 drop) would also have been okay with it’s flying and indestrutible. Or Meteor Golem (7 drop) while only a 3/3 it destroys target creature on ETB. There’s a few other hexproofs at the 8 drop level.

Again flyers, if you got them and your opponent doesn’t have any, it can be just killer. Two that have been pretty cool to get is the Chorium, the Mutable and Windreader Sphinx (which draws you cards).

With research, learned that there are a decent amount of flyers at the 6 drop level. While I would love to roulette at the 5 drop for Lyra, there’s just too much other clutter… However once, I rouletted at the 6 drop, and got Demonlord Belzenlok, and he just milled away my whole library. Lol. “Oops” and “Good game” was all I could say. (^ ^ ; ) I now, cautiously roulette at the 6 drop level.

So yes, my current strategy is pass until turn 5, and then momir up until the 10 drop Greatwurm. But! if my opponent gets a decent damage dealer early ish (I will take a few 1 pings), then my strategy is to roulette at the 3 drop level in hopes of getting a mana dork, so that I can still get my wurm. If not, then I’m hoping for a decent blocker (which is of course still a gamble.)

Once I got a Tilonalli’s Skinshifter that is useless in this format. Sadly, Tishana, Voice of Thunder also gets nerfed in this format. Once mine died upon like entering the battlefield or something. There are other creatures that also get nerfed in this format. Although conversely, creatures with ETB of removing a creature become quite powerful. Multani, Yavimaya’s Avatar’s reliance on land is one of those positive cases as well.

Regarding lands, which don’t matter much, but I developed a strategy or style there too. Lol. At first, I really was trying to WUBRG stuff.. but Arena.. doesn’t put the lands in WUBRG order (- – ; ) At least not in Momir’s Madness. I was trying to get like one of each color. And then realized it was kinda hard to visually count. Then tried the just one or two land types, which was easier to count, but realized that could be a disadvantage in case I wanted to activate some abilities. So… now my current land drop strategy is … to put down 2 copies of any matching and hope for a matching set of 2 each. I rearrange my hand so that I can drop from the left side and discard from the right side. (^ ^; ) Super minor, but it makes me happy.
